Indeed, instead of going wide with the picture in late October, A Monster Calls will now be released in a limited 10-city run on December 23rd before going wide in 1,500 theaters on January 6th. Originally slated to arrive on October 21, A Monster Calls was being readied to square off against the Tom Cruise-fronted sequel Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Keeping Up with the Joneses, Boo! Moreover, while late October is still an awards friendly release date, it’s a bit riskier as the studio must ensure the film is not forgotten in the glut of November and December movies.
A Monster Calls will stomp into theaters nationwide on January 6.
This also bodes well for the quality of the movie, because the reason for the release date change comes after some positive test screenings and press reactions.
The film also features Toby Kebbell (Fantastic Four), Sigourney Weaver (Avatar) and Geraldine Chaplin (The Orphanage).
The weekend that A Monster Calls leaves behind is a complete nightmare in regards to competition, and the pic’s new date gives it ample time to breathe and spur word-of-mouth during the year-end holidays and into 2017. A Madea Halloween, and Pure Flix’s Columbine tragedy teen drama I’m Not Ashamed. For the sake of comparison, it’s now due to open against Amityville: The Awakening and horror sequel/franchise revival Underworld: Blood Wars on January 6.
