A Quantum Leap in Gaming: NVIDIA Introduces GeForce GTX 1080
The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 and 1080 GPUs represent the latest generation of graphic cards for consumer PCs.

The GTX 1080 can push out 9 Teraflops of single-precision graphics compute power and has 8GB of VRAM, which is incidentally Micron’s new, faster GDDR5X RAM running at 10Gbps for a total bandwidth of 320GBps. Nvidia is also going to come up with the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070, which maybe less powerful than the 1080 models but would anyways out do the Titan X graphics card.
Nvidia has officially confirmed that it will be holding a “special event” this Friday the 6th of May, coinciding with reports that it would be officially unveiling two new Pascal graphics cards this week. According to Nvidia, the GTX 1080 is faster than two GTX 980s in SLI, shipping to users on May 27th at $599.
What’s more interesting is that the GTX 1080 is a direct response to AMD’s bold claims that its new Polaris based cards will offer VR-ready performance at a “mainstream” price point.
Another rumor suggests that NVIDIA will actually announce three graphic cards, the other one being GTX 1060 Ti. Huang then asked to see a snapshot of the system’s specifications once the demo was completed, revealing that the card was clocked at a mind-blowing 2,114MHz, yet remained extremely cool at 67 degrees Celsius.
As per VR World, NVIDIA expects that the new Pascal GP-104 GPU-based cards will “bring the honey” for the company.
Note the relatively low performance of Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang. “It’s faster than a Titan X, not by a little bit, but by a whole lot, and with much less power”. The GTX 1080 Founders Edition will retail for $699, with the GTX 1070 Founders Edition costing $449.
Another product that may be launch alongside is the GTX 980 which might not be able to outdo the Titan range, but would be a great affordable option to add on your PC so that virtual reality means be possible.
For a start, it marks a long-overdue switch from 28nm processes to 16nm, not to mention the introduction of FinFET or 3D transistors which increase circuit density and efficiency: think about the difference it makes when you go from building single-story homes to high-rise condo buildings.

In our recent “In Theory” piece, we pieced together a potential scenario for the performance level of the new wave of Pascal GPUs, based on available information derived from the official spec for the much larger GP100 chip, combined with the more plausible leaks from the Far Eastern press.
