A Rally-Inspired Toyota RAV4 TRD Is Coming Soon

This engine produces 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque, and runs on the Atkinson cycle like the engines in many hybrids, to improve efficiency.

“Aimed squarely at extreme off-roading enthusiasts who challenge themselves and their trucks and SUVs in some of the harshest conditions, the new 2017 Tacoma TRD Pro will raise the bar on TRD Pro performance”, Toyota said in a statement.

In developing the truck, TRD engineers started with the Tacoma TRD Off-Road 4×4 Double Cab Short Bed model. It includes Fox 2.5 internal-bypass shocks, TRD-tuned front springs with a 1.0-inch lift, and TRD-tuned rear suspension bits. It will be available with a six-speed manual transmission – as well as a six-speed automatic.

For those interested in really venturing off the beaten path, Toyota has rolled out the latest member of its TRD Pro family at the 2016 Chicago auto show. Rounding out the package are blacked out and color-keyed trim items and TRD PRO badging.

Every Tacoma TRD Pro will be equipped with 4WDemand part-time 4WD with a transfer case and Automatic Limited-Slip Differential (Auto LSD) that are both electronically-controlled. The TRD Pro prominently features a retro-inspired “TOYOTA” with blacked-out hood scoop. Unfortunately, you have to give up Crawl Control and Multi-terrain Select if you want the stick. The model also has an aluminum front skid plate, LED fog lights, and projector-beam headlights with black bezels and integrated LED daytime running lights. Rounding out the changes are TRD floor mats and a 4.2-inch multi-information display with integrated inclinometer and tilt gauges. Toyota also included other standard features we like: a standard Class IV tow hitch, trailer-sway control, a larger engine oil cooler, power steering cooler, a 130-amp alternator and hill start assist. Plenty of safety features can also be found on the truck, including rear parking assist sonar, Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA).

While the name may stand for Toyota Racing Development, the TRD Pro isn’t quite as hardcore as, say, a Ford F-150 Raptor or a Ram Power Wagon. Those opting for the manual gearbox get the active traction-control system that uses the antilock brake system to control power flow to the wheels without cutting throttle input.

Danger? The Tacoma is like Simba.. it laughs in the face of danger ha ha
