“I want to credit my teammates”, Elmore said. “Our goal at the beginning of the year was to win a national championship”.
Game time in sports is notorious for not really abiding by the rules of, well time.
The Mountaineers and Herd have identical 25-10 records, but not much else is similar.
For the first time in six tries during 62 years, the Thundering Herd won an NCAA Tournament game. If that sounds familiar, it might be because Marshall’s head coach Dan D’Antoni – brother of Houston Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni. The Herd relies on spacing and quick perimeter shots.
“Long time!” coach Dan D’Antoni said moments later.
Quotable: “I think it’s cool that the whole world is going to get to watch our in-state battle even though it’s all the way out in California”. “We’re going to key in on him, team defense, just like we did against Murray State”.
West Virginia University and Marshall University have always had a complicated relationship, whether it be on the basketball court, the football field or in the academic arena. They don’t have a win over a tournament team this season but played No. 1-seed Xavier close in an 81-77 loss in mid-December. “Our kids fit the style real well”, D’Antoni said. Wherever we get in the vehicle driving down the road to that championship, when it stops we’ll all get off and we’ll be happy because we like who is in the auto.
“From a defensive standpoint, I wouldn’t say we’ve faced almost as much consistent pressure throughout the game”, West said. “That’s what makes it fun”.
If Marshall is to beat their in-state rivals, they will have to play a game similar to the one against Wichita State where they only had nine turnovers.
Junior guard Jon Elmore: Elmore is the star of the Marshall offense, and his offensive numbers definitely indicate that. While fans talk smack and the buzz swells back in the Mountain State, Carter shrugged off the storyline. WVU sophomores Chase Harler (Moundsville, West Virginia) and Logan Routt (Cameron, West Virginia) regularly play for the Mountaineers.
D’Antoni had a viral moment last season when he went on a rant about the value of analytics.
“I never advanced past the first weekend in my entire college career, which is something I definitely was not really expecting”, Frankamp said, seeming nearly stunned saying it aloud for the first time.

With one minute to play in Wichita State’s NCAA Tournament game Friday against Marshall, the Shockers trailed 78-72. “Coach (Huggins) has done a great job with what they have and what they do”. I don’t know who is going to win.
