India has not criticised Russian Federation over its annexation of Crimea, and has objected to western sanctions against Moscow, but has also given the appearance of wanting to maintain a distance from Putin’s increasingly assertive strategic thrust beyond his country’s borders.
“Mutual investments now average around $11 billion and we want to increase them to $30-50 billion by 2025”, Jaishankar said Tuesday, according to the Moscow Times.
Modi, who was in Russian Federation on Thursday, tweeted that he is “looking forward to meeting” Sharif in Lahore, “where I will drop by on my way back to Delhi”.
The two leaders will also oversee the signing of agreements expected to focus on defense, nuclear and space cooperation.
“Let me begin by expressing my deepest condolences on the loss of lives in the terrorist attack on a civilian Russian aircraft and in the unfortunate downing of the military jet in Syria”, Modi said. “Our membership of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa), East Asia Summit, G20 and now Shanghai Cooperation Organisation gives our partnership a global character”, the prime minister said.
Hailing Modi’s visit, BJP general secretary Ram Madhav said the two neighbours needed to inject informality in their relations, as is the case in many places of the world like the European Union and ASEAN.
Putin highlighted the countries’ active interparliamentary and intergovernmental commission work, and emphasized the importance of addressing issues that require special attention in light of a complicated economic climate. He also hoped that, Russia-India cooperation is very much essential to build up a multi-polar world. Putin has been making concerted efforts to push the economic growth which witnessed significant slowdown following Western sanctions after the Ukrainian crisis. Both the nations signed 16 new agreements.
Following the talks, officials from both countries signed a slew of agreements on manufacturing helicopters, prospective joint exploration of Russian oil resources, simplifying visas for businessmen and other issues. Russia’s Kamov OAO is to name an Indian partner to build 200 Ka-226T light military cargo helicopters in India.
