A Spurs Superfan Reflects on What Tim Duncan Means to His City

We lost basketball royalty on Monday with legendary San Antonio Spur Tim Duncan officially announcing his retirement after an unforgettable 19-year career. But last season’s campaign was disrupted by a knee injury and he played in only 61 games. No showboating, no chest pounding, no showing-up another player, no cheap or hard fouls (he averaged 2.4 personal fouls per game), no me, me, me.

Popovich was not light in is gratitude to Duncan going as far as to say as Duncan made his career possible.

For the first time in 20 years, San Antonio Spurs fans woke up to a day without Tim Duncan. Duncan kept it simple, score a basket, get back on defense.

Duncan opted into his 5.6 million dollar player option, which he will get to keep, but still retired as we knew it was always a possibility.

Duncan has two children – son Draven and daughter Sydney – and for several years has had a side business in San Antonio customizing automobiles.

With Duncan as the focal point, the Spurs won five championships, made the playoffs in all 19 of his seasons and cemented themselves as one of the most successful sports franchises in history.

“But if you think about a little bit more earthly, worldly type of people, people who are interesting, I think of people like William F. Buckley on the right and Gore Vidal on the left when they had their debates”. He is expected to appear at another press conference later this week.

Despite his own personal and team success, Duncan said the aspects of his career he’ll remember the most are the people and the lasting relationships he created. The No. 1 overall pick in the 1997 NBA Draft, Duncan would collect 15 All-Star nods, two league MVPs, three finals MVPs, and was named to the All-NBA first team nine times in his career.

Popovich spoke in a corner of the Spurs’ practice facility in San Antonio, the spot where he holds court with reporters after workouts during the season.

Kidd has talked before about how close he came to joining the Spurs and joked he had some good wine while in talks with Spurs coach Gregg Popovich.

Parker said: “Greatest Power Forward Ever!”

“Tim Duncan is one of the most dominant players in National Basketball Association history”, the league’s commissioner Adam Silver said. He’s not pointing to the sky. “That’s really who he is”. “But his teammates have and that’s why his teammates love him”.
