The tension between Mick Jagger and Keith Richards has threatened to tear the Rolling Stones asunder a few times, but it’s also driven the band to produce much of their best music – and Richards says he and his longtime partner are still throwing sparks after all these years.

“There was no plan on this”. A documentary about the making of the album, called “Keith Richards: Under the Influence“, is also available starting today, on Netflix. Keith has never been a very good singer, but the album sounds great and has excellent production overall. “In other words if you’re growing up at 4 years old and you can sing Billie Holiday songs, you realize that ‘ya, brought up on the blues without even knowing it, ‘” he said.

He went on to worship musicians like Muddy Waters, an interest that bonded him with former classmate Mick Jagger.

The Stones guitarist talked about the Stones’ plans to record their first studio album since 2005’s “A Bigger Bang” during an iHeartRadio ICONS broadcast from New York this week. “Sometimes he can get up my end, and I have no doubt that I can certainly piss him off sometimes”, Richards tells NPR. “I listened to some of the music he was doing and I heard these incredible influences, from soul and blues to jazz, and I decided to bring a pile of vinyl albums over to his house, and we ended up just talking about albums for a couple of hours”.

Darlene Love, “Introducing Darlene Love” (Wicked Cool/Columbia): The “Twenty Feet From Stardom” co-star is helped on her first album in decades by Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Joan Jett, Linda Perry and more, as well as producer Stevie Van Zandt.

“This is the thing with the Stones”. So there’s always that feeling of something more to come. “Some anticipation. The energy is there”.
