A view at both Walking Dead shows

As the survivors on that show find a (hopefully) semi-permanent home in Alexandria, Dead should give its characters room to grow in the same way Fear did in its first season.

Another suggestion is that perhaps Madison has been aggressive in her past or has had a drug problem and that is why she has the need to hide it away from the people around her. Regardless, it is possible that at least a few of her dark past will be revealed in season 2 of Fear The Walking Dead.
