A year later, Iran nuclear deal is holding but fragile

Bilgin Aygul, president of the government-run Foreign Economic Relations Board of Turkey (DEIK), for his part, described the Iranian market as “powerful and attractive”.

Iran’s president says the Islamic Republic could restore elements of its nuclear program that were halted under its landmark deal if world powers that backed the agreement don’t live up to their end of the bargain.

This was always a reasonable prospect, given the history of arms control agreements.

“I’m concerned about everything associated with this deal”, McCain said.

Thus, Iranian cheating can be moved from the column of fears and suspicions and placed into the column of established facts.

While the reporting isn’t entirely consistent on the matter, it appears that after signing the deal in Vienna last July, Iran continued to try to procure materials for its restricted nuclear program. The findings by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Germany’s equivalent of the FBI, were issued last week. The other sides have in return committed to terminating all nuclear-related sanctions imposed by the United States, the United Nations (UN) and the European Union (EU) against Iran. The German report also stated “it is safe to expect that Iran will continue its intensive procurement activities in Germany using clandestine methods to achieve its objectives”.

In the past year, the IAEA has gained unprecedented access to Iran’s nuclear facilities and supply chain, and the agency can now use modern safeguards technologies in its monitoring and verification efforts, in order to block possible covert pathways to a nuclear weapon.

The Institute for Science and International Security has learned that Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization (AEOI) recently made an attempt to purchase tons of controlled carbon fiber from a country.

“Iran alone accounted for 82% of all executions recorded” in the Middle East and North Africa, the human rights group said. These centrifuges could be used to carry out large-scale enrichment of uranium. Iran now has been in compliance for two and a half years with stringent restrictions on its nuclear program agreed to in multilateral negotiations.

The main reason for that, he says, is that members of Congress see that Iran has been emboldened to act even more aggressively, undertaking controversial ballistic missile testing, for example. Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has been discussing ramping up pressure and sanctions for Iranian activity on its missile program and her Republican rival Donald Trump has been campaigning on scrapping the nuclear deal altogether.

And what is the reaction from the Obama administration and other cheerleaders for the JCPOA?

On Wednesday, speaking on the eve of the agreement’s first anniversary, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani praised the deal, which, he said, had contributed to global peace, security and stability.

According to the Post, which cited sections of what it said was a draft agreement, United States and Russian commanders would set up a joint command and control center to direct intensified air strikes against the jihadist groups.

“They won’t be able to gather together against us as they did in the past, especially when we are showing them a new face of flexibility”, said Mohebbian. That line of argument has become less credible as the highly intrusive worldwide inspection procedures that the agreement itself put into place have been working as they were supposed to work and have confirmed Iranian compliance. Just ignore the problem. “We still have serious differences with Iran, but the United States, our partners, and the world are more secure because of the JCPOA”. The bill would authorize those sanctions, should Iran violate the deal, through 2026.
