AAA: Lowest Labor Day gas prices in a decade

“Low gas prices are added incentive for Americans to take a road trip this Labor Day weekend”, AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins said in a press release. The current state average prices of $2.31 in Florida and Georgia, and $2.17 in Tennessee are $1.06, $1.02, and $1.04 cheaper than the price during last year’s holiday respectively, AAA said today.

The number of Marylanders traveling for Labor Day this year is expected to nudge up slightly, reflecting the sixth consecutive year of increases for the holiday. “When gas prices drop, travelers have additional disposable income, meaning more money to spend on lodging, shopping, and dining out”.

The average price in the Bradenton-Sarasota-Venice market was $2.265 on Monday, down from $2.268 the previous day, according to AAA data.

The price in Palm Beach County was $2.49 per gallon, down five cents from a week earlier and 21 cents from a month ago.

Labor Day gas prices will be a bargain this year, AAA says.

About 86 percent of travelers will drive. About 35.5 million U.S. residents are expected to take trips 50 miles or more from home this weekend, up about 1 percent from previous year, the travel club said. Last year, 4,834 motorists in Virginia motorists needed a rescue. Going to cookouts with family and friend, relaxing or simply “catching up on things at home” will be the most popular activities, as 68 percent of respondents begin to make the transition from the lazy days of summer to the busy fall and winter months. AAA says it expects 87 percent of Washington metro area travelers to go somewhere by vehicle, 7 percent to travel by air and 5 percent by bus, watercraft or rail. “Though some consumers remain cautious, these positive indicators are driving a slight increase and allowing millions of Americans to travel on one last summer getaway”.
