It’s going to be a busy holiday weekend on the nation’s highways.

AAA Michigan says gas prices statewide have decreased by about 13 cents in the past week. Gas prices as of June 20 were 46 cents per gallon below prices from a year ago.

Including airplanes and trains, AAA projects almost 43 million Americans will travel this Independence Day weekend, the highest July 4 travel volume on record and five million more travelers than over Memorial Day weekend.

Travel by other modes of transportation, including cruiSES, trains and buses, will increase two percent to 3.3 million travelers. This year’s estimate the highest since AAA started tracking in 2001 is for 42.9 million travelers with 84 percent of them driving. Combined with robust Memorial Day travel numbers, the Fourth of July figures are expected to make for record-breaking summertime travel.

Airfares and hotel rates lower than last Independence DayAccording to AAA’s Leisure Travel Index, average airfares for the top 40 domestic flight routes will be nine percent less this Independence Day, with an average roundtrip ticket costing $207. That’s an approximately 2.6% increase from past year, when 42.3 million travelers trekked at least 50 miles from home for the long weekend.

AAA also advises that to make sure your auto is inspected at a trusted fix shop before hitting the road.

In addition to cheap gas, consumer confidence and rising economic activity are offsetting a cooling labor market to boost holiday travel, AAA said.
