‘Abad’ Loss for the Red Sox

Mike Zunino opened the eighth with a home run to left off Price, and then Leonys Martin, Sardinas and Guillermo Heredia followed with consecutive singles to chase Price. Sandy Leon sacrificed Shaw to second and Holt then bounced an single up the middle off the glove of diving shortstop Sean O’Malley.

“It’s what we needed tonight”, said Brad Ziegler, who pitched a scoreless 11th inning and recorded the last out with the tying run on third. They’re also a ideal 6-0 in his last six home starts, are 7-1 in his last eight outings versus opponents from the American League East, and are 20-7 in his last 27 home starts versus a team with a winning record. “Standing just 5’10” and weighing 170 pounds, Benintendi packs a whole lot of power into his swing, having amassed 20 home runs in the equivalent of one entire minor league season.

Seattle starter Ariel Miranda allowed two runs and eight hits in six innings in his major league debut after being called up earlier in the day from Triple-A Tacoma.

Blue Jays 3, Astros 1: Josh Donaldson hit two home runs, and Marco Estrada threw seven solid innings in Toronto’s victory over Houston.

But he allowed just two runs (both earned) and four hits while striking out six.

The Red Sox (58-48) fell three games behind Baltimore in the American League East standings, despite outhitting the Mariners 7-4. Boston took a 4-0 lead into the eighth inning at Safeco Field, but a very good pitching performance by David Price turned bad in a hurry when the Mariners put up five runs in the inning to come away with a 5-4 win.

Before he played with the Twins or the Red Sox, he was property of the M’s.

Pomeranz walked six hitters – one intentional – in six innings Thursday night. However, Miranda got out of that jam by striking out Jackie Bradley Jr. and getting Aaron Hill to fly out to right field. O’Malley had three hits. Porcello would redeem himself a bit, he finally got someone base who stopped at first instead of slowly trotting around all of them.

Trailing 3-0 in the eighth, Boston mounted its best threat when rookie Andrew Benintendi and right fielder Mookie Betts collected back-to-back, one-out singles.

Cruz, Zunino and Lind homered in the third, sixth and seventh innings, respectively, while Seattle starter Hisashi Iwakuma threw 7 1/3 shutout innings. He went to closer Craig Kimbrel, who was able to get Cano to ground out to end the inning and send it into extra innings. Boston OF Michael Martinez was claimed off waivers by Cleveland.

But the Red Sox have lost four out of seven. The 40-year-old designated hitter is retiring after the 2016 season.

Hanley Ramirez was out of the Boston Red Sox’s lineup on Wednesday night with a sprained left wrist, but the team said there is no structural damage.

Travis Shaw was set to start at first base in Ramirez’s place for the Red Sox on Wednesday and Farrell said at this point they don’t believe Ramirez is a candidate for the disabled list. RHP Steven Wright will pitch Friday’s opener, with LHPs Eduardo Rodriguez (Saturday) and David Price (Sunday) following.
