Abduction of Mexican drug lord’s son could unleash violence

A group of men were abducted at gunpoint from an upscale restaurant in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, in what appears to be a high-level attack in the war between two of the country’s most powerful drug cartels.

The assailants have been identified as belonging to the dominant criminal group in the state, the Jalisco New Generation cartel, according to the state attorney, while the victims are all believed to be from the rival Sinaloa cartel headed by Guzman in the neighbouring state of Sinaloa.

“The person.is the son of Joaquin Guzman Loera, and has been identified through [inspections of] vehicles and by security agencies, as well as through expert opinions”, Almaguer said.

State Attorney General Eduardo Almaguer told reporters that forensic evidence collected at the scene had confirmed Jesus Alfredo Guzman’s abduction. Almaguer backpedaled on his earlier remarks that Archivaldo was among those abducted early Monday morning.

“I want to be precise that Jesús Alfredo Guzmán Salazar is the son of Joaquin Guzman”.

Authorities initially said 10 to 12 people had been kidnapped, but after analyzing security camera footage and interviewing witnesses, they said there were in fact six men abducted.

Mexican authorities are searching for the missing men as well as those responsible, Almaguer said. White decor adorns the interior of restaurant, known for its global dishes.

The incident unfolded inside the trendy white-walled eatery, whose name translates to Milk, on Francisco Medina Ascencio Avenue, a popular tourist destination.

“El Chapo” was the head of the Sinaloa cartel and one of the world’s most wanted drug kingpins until he was captured in January.

The Guzman family confirmed that they had not been able to get in touch with Archivaldo, who was traveling in Puerto Vallarta.
