About 2000 meals served during Jonesboro Community Thanksgiving Meal event

The Lewisburg Community Thanksgiving Dinner will be Thursday from 11 a.m.to 3 p.m.at the Lewisburg Community Center. These turkeys will be a part of a Thanksgiving meal for people across the north side of the county.

Richard Carvell an official with the event said about 570 volunteer served around 1,907 meals. “That’s why we, the borough, depend on these organizations to fill the gaps in that vital service: helping our most vulnerable citizens get the food they need”.

The effort usually produces more boxes than recipients the church can arrange ahead of time, so after gathering to put the boxes together, many volunteers will take an extra box with them and simply find someone who might need it. “Any of those items can either be dropped off at First Presbyterian Church on Tuesday or on Wednesday at Stevenson Elementary after 9 a.m”. There were also 89 home-delivered meals prepared and delivered to those who are disabled.

In year’s past they’ve served 300.

“It pretty much makes my day”, Carlisle native Russell Mitchell said. “Obviously you want to help the community and do what you can, but from my perspective it’s a lot of fun and I get a good feeling”.

A tradition that began more than two decades ago is again underway this year.

For people looking to celebrate Thanksgiving, but without the means to do it, Avery Roman is offering a holiday dinner for the Greenwood community.

A free meal of turkey, potatoes, gravy, stuffing, corn, cranberries and dessert will be offered from 11 a.m.to 1 p.m.at Concordia Lutheran Church. From feeding the hungry, clothing the poor, caring for and healing the sick, taking care of widows and orphans, eating with those considered sinners, and always putting others above himself, crowds of people hungered for his love and message wherever he went. The church does have an elevator, so those with physical disabilities will be able to join in.
