However, with six games left to play, Milan now find themselves sixth in the Serie A standings after Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Juventus, a defeat that extended their winless run to five matches, leaving them just a point ahead of Sassuolo.

AC Milan have announced the sacking of coach Sinisa Mihajlovic, replacing the Serbian with youth-team boss Cristian Brocchi until the end of the season. Former Milan midfielder Brocchi had been at the helm of the club’s top academy side.

Results did improve and Milan have reached the Coppa Italia final but the recent slump in league form has proved the final straw and the club find themselves in limbo yet again.

Allegri went on to take over at Juventus that July, steering the Bianconeri to the Italian league and cup double and to the Champions League final in his first season in charge.

Milan have fallen from grace since they last won Serie A in 2011, going through a succession of managers.
