Academy Awards 2016: The Revenant gets 12 nominations
The categories include the usuals, such as Best Picture and Best Director, but of course their nominees are different, with this year’s highlights including The Revenant, which received the most nominations with 12 total, and Mad Max: Fury Road with 10 nods.

In a statement, DiCaprio, who’s expected to land his first Oscar in his fifth nomination, called making “The Revenant” “one of the most rewarding and collaborative experiences of my life”.
While the best picture nominees can number anywhere from five to 10, best director nominations are limited to five: Adam McKay, “The Big Short”; George Miller, “Mad Max: Fury Road”; Alejandro G. Inarritu, “The Revenant”; Lenny Abrahamson, “Room”; and Tom McCarthy, “Spotlight”. Why did the achingly poignant lesbian love story “Carol” rack up six nods – including Blanchett for best actress and Rooney Mara for supporting actress – but get inexplicably shut out of the best picture and director categories?
Larson won best actress at Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards.
In the Best Actress category I think while Jennifer Lawrence is now the world’s sweetheart, Brie Larson will take home the Oscar for her leading role in Room.
Maybe Academy Award voters just wanted to make sure Oscars host Chris Rock had something to talk about? “Talking gets to the doing, and we are going to do”.
Tom Hardy, who has been nominated in the Best Supporting actor category for the film said he learned of his own nomination during a shoot earlier in the day.
Micheal Keaton and Rachel McAdams in “Spotlight”.
Aside from a nomination for composer John Williams (his 45th for scoring, and 50th overall), Star Wars: The Force Awakens did not break through the technical achievements wall. They will compete with Sylvester Stallone for Creed and Mark Ruffalo (Spotlight). Critics seem to suggest that this year he has finally some bigger opportunities of being recognized for his pristine performance at The Revenant, a film that was shot under freezing temperatures with natural lights.
It wasn’t to be: This crop of eight best-picture nominees, while an eclectic mix, fits comfortably into the pattern of Academy Awards past. Oscar darling Helen Mirren was also snubbed in her bid for a Best Supporting Actress nod for her part in Trumbo, as was Kristen Stewart for her Cesar Award (the French equivalent of Oscar)-winning role in Clouds of Sils Maria.
The year’s two most crowded fields are not necessarily the most glamorous, but determining the top picks from the possible contenders in best supporting actor and best cinematographer had to be tough.
The 88th annual Academy Award nominations for best foreign-language film have been announced. But the Academy thought Hardy put in some solid work, just like his fellow nominee Leonardo DiCaprio.
