Hardy’s “Mad Max: Fury Road” also exercised some gasoline-fueled muscle.

It received 10 nominations, including cinematography and costume design.

Cheryl Boone Isaacs, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, has responded to the controversy surrounding this year’s all-white Oscar nominations and confessed to being disappointed about the lack of diversity.

None of the nominated Best Picture films in the major categories feature people of colour. Spotlight, The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, The Revenant and Room are going to compete for the biggest award.

The award season continues with the release of the 2016 Oscar nominations. But Michael Keaton, who got a best actor nod past year for “Birdman”, was not recognized for his supporting work in “Spotlight”. In an interview with Deadline, Isaacs expressed her frustration. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, the latest installment in the space saga that has been setting box office records, was nominated for five Oscars, but missed the cut in the top categories including for best picture. Instead, the only nomination it got was for the screenplay – and the screenplay was written by a white man and woman. None of the stars in acting nominations include a black person.

Like a year ago, there was an absence of performers of color.

Piers Morgan, a journalist, wrote, “BREAKING NEWS: Oscars Whitewash: 20 acting nominations, no black actors among them”. People are using the popular hashtag past year, #OscarsSoWhite, to show their grudge for the discrimination. Aside from DiCaprio, he’s up against Bryan Cranston, Michael Fassbender and Eddie Redmayne in that category.

On the other hand, Cate Blanchett, Carol, Brie Larson, Room, Jennifer Lawrence, Joy, Charlotte Rampling, 45 Years, Saoirse Ronan, Brooklyn were nominated for actress in a leading role.
