“The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston would like to thank Academy Sports + Outdoors for their generous donation that will prepare many of our children for the upcoming school year”, said Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston President and CEO, Kevin R. Hattery.
“It warms our heart to be able to make these kids smile and give them a good start to the school year”, said Jackie King, apparel manager at the Stillwater store. These last two years it’s been the Denison Boys & Girls Club.
Texas-based Academy operates 210 stores in the South and Midwest. “We have about 200 kids and we have to get it down to 30”, executive director Rhonda Gorham said. Over the course of the day, the team members were supported by children from the Boys & Girls Clubs. “Lots of times, the parents will come and share with us that they need their child at the club but don’t have any way to do it”.
“I’ve already started football practice. I play with the Killer Bees”, Jericho said as he carefully looked over the selection. When she spotted a blue pair matching his gloves and on sale for half price, he quickly plopped down on the floor and tried on the shoes.
“When they finish shopping and realize ‘Oh I get to take this stuff home?”
McCoy said he volunteered to be a part of the event because he believes kids like Darayvian deserved the opportunity to get free school gear, and it made him feel good to give back.
