Years later Simmons can hardly believe the national park service she loved working with so much is turning the big 1-0-0.
Mike Reynolds, deputy director of the National Park Service, said there is something for everyone in the system.
It was 100 years ago this week on Thursday that the National Park Service was created, and the park service has a plethora of events going on to celebrate their centennial anniversary. The boy, Jim White, would go on to play an instrumental role in establishing Carlsbad Caverns as a national park.
The park service’s newest national monument, Katahdin Woods and Waters in ME, was being readied to welcome its first visitors since President Barack Obama used his executive authority to create it on Wednesday. The 87,500 acre area, which was donated by the founder of Burt’s Bees, will now be taken care of by the National Park Service.
The brochures for the monument are printed and signs are going up, and the National Park Passport Stamp beloved by park visitors is now available.
Walker National Historic Site are holding a free, daylong bus tour highlighting Richmond’s Civil War and civil rights history Saturday, Aug. 27.

The creation of the agency’s 413th property was opposed by state lawmakers and critics fear that it will hinder efforts to rebuild a forest-based economy in the region. Jewell also plans to talk with park officials, scientists and others about how climate change is affecting the park and its disappearing glaciers. Smithsonian Channel will celebrate the centennial with AMERICA’S NATIONAL PARKS AT 100 premiering Sunday, August 28 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park in Maryland offered free mule-drawn boat rides on Thursday.
