ACC Commissioner John Swofford said the decision reflects the league’s “core values”. Cooper is a graduate of ACC member UNC-Chapel Hill.
Three of those had been scheduled for venues in the Triangle: the women’s soccer championship and men’s and women’s tennis championships in Cary, and the baseball tournament at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The law, which Gov.
Gov. Pat McCrory also weighed in on the ACC’s decision.
Gunn was referring to states challenging the Obama administration’s directive to school districts to expand transgender students’ access to bathrooms and locker rooms.
In the wake of this year’s passage of HB2 – commonly known as the “bathroom bill” because it requires transgender people to use restrooms that correspond with the sex on their birth certificates – big-name entertainers have been canceling concerts in the Tar Heel State, the National Basketball Association pulled its 2017 all-star game from Charlotte, and PayPal rescinded a plan to create a 400-employee operation center, also in Charlotte.
It’s unclear whether the law is actually costing McCrory supporters, but the economic hits keep playing into the hands of Democratic challenger Attorney General Roy Cooper, who wants the law repealed. Proponents of HB2 say it protects bathroom privacy.
“This is political theatre by the NCAA and ACC”, U.S. Representative Richard Hudson (NC-08), said in a statement.
The ACC’s Council of Presidents decided Wednesday to remove neutral-site league championships from North Carolina. Several high-profile entertainers, including Bruce Springsteen and Pearl Jam, have canceled shows in North Carolina.
The NBA moved its the All-Star game in Charlotte for the same reasons in July and Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski called the law “embarrassing” in an interview with USA TODAY Sports. “The decision to move the neutral site championships out of North Carolina while HB 2 remains the law was not an easy one but it is consistent with the shared values of inclusion and non-discrimination at all of our institutions”.
And now the ACC, which is headquartered in Greensboro, is doing the same.
Statement from Clemson University President James P. Clements, chair of the ACC Council of Presidents: “The ACC presidents engaged in a constructive, wide-ranging and vigorous discussion of this complex issue over the past two days”.
The NCAA fallout continues in North Carolina due to its transgender bathroom law, or House Bill 2.
The ACC is choosing new locations for neutral-site championships because of North Carolina’s controversial law known as HB2. Copies were sent to the presidents of the 15 member schools. The football championship game, which had been played in Charlotte since 2010, had an economic impact of $32.4 million a year ago, according to the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority.
The ACC football championship, which was to be played December 3 at Bank of America Stadium, had been expected to draw tens of thousands of fans and pour millions of dollars into Charlotte’s economy.
Stephen Curry says he is disappointed to see sporting events pulled from his home state of North Carolina over a law that some say can lead to discrimination against LGBT people. Cary had been set to host the ACC Women’s Soccer Championship on November 4 and 6, and the ACC Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships from April 26-30 in 2017.
But North Carolina is at the very heart of the ACC.
