According to The Hollywood Reporter, the ruling means that Polanski is now

The Oscar-winner pleaded guilty in 1977 to having sex with 13-year-old Samanatha Geimer during a photo shoot in Los Angeles. However, Polanski fled the US before sentencing, fearing a lengthy jail term.

The decision by a judge in Krakow could close the case in Polanski’s favor, providing the US does not appeal it.

Kaczynski himself said earlier this month that he “rejected the idea of pardoning someone simply because he is an eminent, world-renowned director”.

Court sessions have been held intermittently since February, with Polański appearing on several occasions. If the United States does successfully appeal, the current political climate in the country could make an extradition of its famous citizen likely.

Polanski has been in Poland to shoot a new drama about the Dreyfus affair, based on a novel by Robert Harris.

Polish prosecutors have been cooperating with U.S authorities even though under Polish law the statute of limitation on the charges against Polanski long expired.

Film director Roman Polański will not be extradited from Poland, a court in Kraków ruled on Friday.

Polanski’s movements are restricted by an Interpol warrant in effect in 188 countries, but he is avoiding extradition by remaining only in France, Poland and Switzerland.

Polish voters elected a conservative government at the weekend – and officials from the Law and Justice party had said Polanski should be sent to America to face justice. The United States requested Polanski be extradited in January and in 2014 tried to arrest him at the opening of a museum in Warsaw.
