Achuthanandan unhappy with choice of Gopinath as Kerala economic adviser
The controversy over appointment of economist Gita Gopinath as financial adviser to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has reached the doorstep of the CPM central leadership. He asked for Isaac’s reaction on the chief minister’s decision.

On Tuesday, Gita Gopinath had said she was honoured and humbled and expressed hope of contributing toward further developing sustainable policies for the state. The BJP doesn’t have policy to oppose anything and everything done by the ruling party. Gopinath’s support for the economic policies pursued by the last United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government and her endorsement of the key decisions taken by the Narendra Modi government as instances of neo-liberal economic agenda.
But authorities should make sure that in the name of development, corporates should not exploit environment and natural resources.
Gopinath said she would respond to any requests from the Chief Minister for advice on the economic impact on Keralas economy of global, national and state events and policies.
Ms. Gopinath is inclined towards extremely right-wing positions on economic matters and as such appointing such a person as the economic adviser of a Left government was inappropriate, VS reportedly says in the letter, asking the party central leadership why they chose to look the other way when such appointments were being made.

Veteran CPI (M) leader V S Achutanandan had written to the party’s central leadership questioning the appointment, saying her neo-liberal views were contrary to the Left ideology, even as the CPI (M) state leadership came out in support of the decision.
