The footage spread throughout Turkish social media on Tuesday, becoming a trend topic nearly immediately after someone posted the video under the title “Irish tourist singlehandedly beats up Aksaray shopkeepers”, with scores of social media users praising the tourist and mocking the shopkeepers.

But not only did the holiday-maker manage to duck their blows, he was able to land a few of his own.

The CCTV clip – reminiscent of a Kung Fu film – shows locals swarming around the Mr Dobbous, attacking him with chairs and wooden poles.

Things were said to have then escalated after the angry shopkeeper hit him with a stick – leading to dozens of other local shop owners rallying around their neighbour.

They used clubs, stools, sticks and their fists to batter the man after he accidentally opened a street-side fridge too quickly and bottles tumbled out. After taking a punch to the face, one assailant could barely walk.

The shopkeepers eventually retreated when the tourist continued to plunge into the crowd.

Todays Zaman has identified the tourist as Kuwaiti-born Mohammed Fadel Dobbous, who reportedly has Irish citizenship.
