Active Shooter near Planned Parenthood Clinic

The Gazette, citing police scanner traffic, reports that at least two officers were down, one near a dumpster, and another taken by ambulance to a hospital.

Police said the suspect was arrested inside the Planned Parenthood building at 4:52 p.m. Officers were able to contact the suspect by shouting, and the suspect surrendered to officers. Police told the New York Timesthat the shooter is a “white man in a trench coat with an assault rifle”. Officials are also working to help anyone in the surrounding buildings who set up barricades during the standoff.

Planned Parenthood is a national woman’s health care provider that offers abortions at some of its clinics. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton Tweeted her support for Planned Parenthood Friday.

“We have evacuated numerous people from the Planned Parenthood building”, she said repeatedly, noting “there are an unknown number of casualties”.

Buckley told CNN that police had not ruled out the possibility of a hostage situation or a second shooter.

At this time, it is not known how many civilians have been injured, according to Public Information Officer Catherine Buckley.

“You have treatment rooms, you have waiting rooms, you have offices, you have bathrooms”, she said. Lt. Buckley would not say how many people were wounded. Fox News reports that three officers have been injured by the gunman and that one clinic patient was injured as well.

She also said they are not certain that the incident involved only one gunman.

Numerous emergency vehicles are on the scene at the ongoing shooting situation at a Planned Parenthood facility in Colorado Springs.

“We do not know the extent of their injury”.

Police said they first exchanged gunfire with the shooter and contained the attack after responding to calls of an active shooter before noon at the PlannedParenthood clinic.

An employee who answered the phone at a nearby King Soopers said a few dozen customers were locked inside under police orders, but she had not seen a shooter or any other violence across the parking lot from the Planned Parenthood building.

Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains President Vicki Cowart said in a statement the organization’s top priority was patients and staff.
