Activision will not have a booth at E3

Electronic Arts announced in January that it would not be on the show floor, rather hosting its own event in LA and London called EA Play.

What do you think about Activision’s change for this year’s E3?

A few weeks ago, we launched the first series of events in the Call of Duty World League’s Challenge Division, which gives amateur players outside of the Pro Division the chance to compete and qualify for the Call of Duty Championship. After all, Activision just finalized its purchase of Candy Crush developer King, a deal that was estimated to be for upwards of $5.9 billion. But even if it’s a coincidence, losing both EA and Activision in the same year is not a good sign for the 20-year-old industry press event, and perhaps a strong sign that its relevance in an always connected world is fading. While Activision doesn’t appear to have the same livestreaming plans, it’s possible that the publisher simply decided there were better ways to promote its upcoming games than the traditional E3 approach. “We’re proud to be participating in this premier video game event, but won’t have an Activision booth on the show floor”, said Activision.

The publisher will be present at the show, but only via meetings and other booths – for example, Sony’s, where Infinity Ward‘s new Call of Duty is likely to be demonstrated.
