Actor And Comedian Garry Shandling Dies At 66

So after news broke that the comedy great died Thursday at 66, late night hosts honored Shandling with their own on-air tributes that night, remembering the considerable impact he had on their careers.

Lt. David Smith says medical records will be used to determine Shandling’s official cause of death.

Although the circumstances of his death were not immediately known, reports said Shandling was taken from his home to Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica on Thursday morning.

The Chicago-born Shandling had a short stint in advertising before he moved to show business, writing for shows including Welcome Back, Kotter and Sanford and Son.

In addition to stand-up comedy, the producer and star was perhaps best known for “The Larry Sanders Show” and “It’s Garry Shandling’s Show”.

“He did ‘The Larry Sanders Show, ‘ which was completely groundbreaking and changed the way I thought about TV and I think what a lot of people thought about TV”, Meyers said. “This is real life now”. In “Sanders“, Shandling found an insecure nudnik who was both cool overlord of his late-night kingdom and self-abasing host who understood his vocation’s vacuity.

He hosted the Emmy Awards in 2000 and 2004.

In the last decade, Shandling made appearances in small movie roles, including “Marvel’s Captain America: Winter Soldier” and the “Iron Man” films.

“Garry was a guiding voice of comedy”, said actor-comedian Bob Odenkirk. That’s yet another way he inspired me and I’m sure many others who knew him. “He set the standard and we’re all still trying to meet it”. “I have to tell you that this is a devastating shock to me and just about everybody I know” , O’Brien said in his somber monologue.

Garry Handling starred as Larry Sanders whereas there were many talented and young actors who appeared on the show. “Since, basically, I can’t act, the thing to do is get me in an environment where I can just be like this”. Maybe tomorrow I will do better.
