Quaid says he was detained by Canada Border Services on Tuesday. Quaid’s lawyer, Mark Gruszczynski, refused to give a comment regarding Quaid’s circumstance or any information surrounding the arrest.
Quaid, a Texas native, had sought asylum in Canada in 2010, alleging a long-standing plot by former business associates, who he has called “star whackers”, to steal his wealth.
Randy Quaid later withdrew his refugee claim and applied for permanent resident status.
After arriving in 2010, the Quaids lived in Vancouver, Toronto and Ottawa before moving to Montreal in January 2013.
A friend of the couple, Janet Olmsted Cross, told reporters following the hearing the couple are happy in Montreal living off residuals from Quaid’s film career.
“They won’t allow me to remain”, Quaid said.
Santa Barbara senior deputy district attorney Lee Carter said there was an active extradition order for Quaid on a felony vandalism case and prosecutors would be seeking his extradition if he was returned to the United States. In April, Quaid was arrested on a warrant issued in 2013 over missing an appointment for an Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) interview. He was freed after ponying up a $10,000 bond, and he was required to check in with officials.
Quaid has now spoken about his detainment and insisted he is ready to face punishment in California so he can move on with his life.
She reportedly tweeted: “CBSA officer that illegally arrested us asked how much money we had…he is a criminal…i love that Canada needs to learn how to wake up and criticize its crappy government ps we got arrested by an actual tall midget”. He won a Golden Globe award, which he once brought with him to court, for his depiction of President Lyndon Johnson in a TV movie in the late 1980s. He was also nominated for a best supporting actor Oscar in 1973 for his role in “The Last Detail”.
