Actor Robert Loggia dies aged 85

Loggia’s first film credit was 1957’s The Garment Jungle, kicking off an incredible career that included memorable roles in films such as Scarface, An Officer and a Gentleman, Problem Child, Independence Day, and Big.

The 85-year-old veteran actor Robert Loggia has passed away in his Los Angeles home after battling Alzheimer’s disease for years. He was a Miami drug lord in Scarface and a Sicilian mobster in Prizzi’s Honor.

“He loved being an actor – he was a wonderful actor – and loved his profession and his life”, she said, adding that he died with her and their two daughters at his side.

Loggia was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the 1985 thriller “Jagged Edge”, where he starred alongside Glenn Close and Jeff Bridges.

He then turned on the charm three years later in the Penny Marshall’s film, “Big”, as the owner of MacMillan Toy Company. The news of his death was confirmed by Audrey, his wife of 33 years.

Tom Hanks has expressed his grief on Twitter calling Mr Loggia a great actor in heart and soul. He first pursued a career in journalism and studied at the University of Missouri but his interest in acting drew him back to NY, where he took up an acting courses at the Actors Studio.

His other films include “Revenge of the Pink Panther, ‘ ‘Trail of the Pink Panther, ‘ ‘Curse of the Pink Panther, ‘ ‘Over The Top, ‘ ‘Necessary Roughness, ‘ ‘Return to Me” and ‘Armed and risky. (1989-90), and made guest appearances on shows such as “Frasier”, “The Wild Wild West” and “Malcolm in the Middle”, in which Loggia received another Emmy nomination for the FOX sitcom.
