Actress breaks silence on “El Chapo” meeting

ThinkProgress spoke to one Mexico expert who found Penn’s account of the encounter to be unbelievable and another who thought it cohered with what is known about El Chapo and his cartel.

“Each and every each one of the flaws have been fixed”, an official said.

This time around, Penn faces more than mere criticism for his sojourn.

That seems to be a lot of faith for someone who’s a wanted man to put in someone he’s never met.

Del Castillo, 43, a Mexican actress who splits her time between Los Angeles and Mexico City, earned the notorious Sinaloa kingpin’s trust to coordinate the now infamous meeting for Penn – all the while Guzman was still on the run from authorities after breaking out of Mexico’s most-fortified prison.

Mexico is not directly investigating actors Sean Penn and Kate del Castillo for secretly meeting with drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, but will look into the circumstances, a government spokesman said on Tuesday. What if this happened in the United States? No guards approached him until he was safe, and two dozen officials have been arrested for assisting his escape.

“I’ll take care of you. It’s nearly amusing in that sense”. His conversations with producers and del Castillo were part of what brought him down, officials said. Mexico’s Attorney General, however, said that authorities were tipped off by one of the cartel’s tunnel builders.

“Can’t speak to that”, Penn responded curtly when asked via email if he knew of the phone. “I have a fleet of submarines, airplanes, trucks and boats”, Penn quoted Guzman as saying. He cited one extradition case that took six years. “Tell her that”, El Chapo instructed an associate in the days leading up to Penn’s visit. Wenner told The New York Times that he is proud of Rolling Stone’s extraordinary get; but the magazine failed to do anything worthwhile with what it got.

CBS News anchor Charlie Rose teased a sitdown interview with Penn while speaking to reporters at a Television Critics Association panel Tuesday.

“Federal courts are pretty consistent that they don’t see any qualified First Amendment privilege”, Ellis said. “It’s all I think about”.

“In the interview in Rolling Stone, Guzman defended his role as the head of the world’s biggest drug-trafficking organization, blamed for thousands of killings”.

“No, you’re reading hits”, he said in the email exchange with the AP. Andrew Seaman, the chair of the ethics committee for the Society of Professional Journalists, wrote in a SPJ blog post that “allowing any source control over a story’s content is inexcusable”. “The practice of pre-approval discredits the entire story – whether the subject requests changes or not”.

Penn had his own implied criticism for Mexican forces, expressing surprise that a soldier at a checkpoint waved his vehicle through on the way to the meeting with Guzman in October. It appears to resemble the Barabas “Crazy Paisley” style.

“He was interested in seeing the story of his life told on film, but would entrust its telling only to Kate (del Castillo),”Penn wrote. How could he be so sloppy?”
