Even after gaining a man-advantage from the 57th minute, when Martin Skrtel received a second yellow card for another foul on Harry Kane, the visitors struggled to break through Slovakia’s resistance in their first game in Group F.

Allardyce got his reign off to a winning start against Slovakia on Sunday, but Collymore has urged the new man at the helm to consider pairing Kane with the Liverpool striker despite it not being the norm to have two attackers up top at global level. “He holds a lot more experience at worldwide football than me as an global manager”.

“So using his experience with a team, and playing as a team member, it’s not for me to say where he’s going to play”.

“If so, great. We’d like to get him into goalscoring positions more. I think that he holds a lot more experience at worldwide football than me as an global manager”. “But I was pleased with his performance”.

He pushed up into a more orthodox number 10 role at half-time, only to retreat to a midfield holding role after Allardyce sent on Dele Alli for Henderson.

Sam Allardyce chose to start Rooney in a deep central midfield role against Slovakia and needless to say he was no good in that position.

Adding to the confusion, Rooney himself told ITV he had played “where Sam wanted me to play”.

Slovenia staged a late fightback to draw 2-2 at Lithuania.

Slovakia coach Jan Kozak felt his team’s display had set the tone for the rest of their Group F campaign. But the opposition were very tough.

“With Thomas Mueller I’d rather he had scored a few goals at the European Championship”, Germany coach Joachim Loew joked of the forward who hadn’t scored internationally since October 2015.

“It was hard to break them down. but we got what we deserved”.
