“It’s so surreal to get Team GB’s first gold, but this product is seven years of work”.

After he scooped gold – and smashed his own world record for the second time in two days – she proudly told her 3,400 followers: ‘My Grandson has done it’.

The grandmother of Olympic gold medal-winning swimmer Adam Peaty has staged a celebratory tea party with friends and family. “I was a bit on, a bit off”, he added.

“The only reason I didn’t move out was because of the winning formula”, said Peaty, who saw no reason for upheaval in the build-up to Rio.

Meanwhile, Peaty has shown off his strength in a social media video where he pushed his whole body off the floor into the air and also managed to clap his hands.

Mavis revealed Peaty – already the world, European and Commonwealth champion – had not always been a natural in the pool.

But two were won on the second night of swimming finals here, with Peaty leading the way and Jazz Carlin adding silver in the 400m freestyle. I came out tonight, did the first 50m easy and then gave it everything I’ve got. He did so in world record time, racing to 57.13 seconds; the win marked the largest margin of victory ever in this event: 1.56 seconds.

We’ll leave the last word to Mavis, who tweeted prior to Peaty’s race: “This is what all that hard training has been for….”

“To see your team-mate achieve a new world record and become Olympic champion right before you swim definitely got me pumped up”.

“But for now I’m going to enjoy it and get the relay done and deliver another good performance for Team GB”.

A camera crew from the BBC was on hand to capture her erupting with joy as she watched her grandson make Olympic history.

Carlin, who posted a time of 4:01:23, became the first Welsh woman since Valerie Davies’ double bronze win of 1932 to claim an Olympic medal in the pool. I’ve got eight more years, maybe more, in this game.

Her husband said seeing his son presented with the gold medal was “very good”, while his wife said when Adam sang the national anthem “emotionally that just broke me”.

He has come a long way since childhood, when he was scared of having a bath. I’m exhausted, excited, and I’ll be glad when he comes home now. My parents have been there from the start and always push me forward.
