Adam Wingard’s The Woods renamed Blair Witch in huge SDCC reveal
Director Adam Wingard and Lionsgate have been quietly prepping the mysterious horror film The Woods for a while now – but it turns out there’s a whole lot more to this project than meets the eye.

Blair Witch was a highly kept secret, in production under the working title The Woods, but it was revealed to be a sequel at a San Diego Comic-Con screening Friday night. The new trailer has plenty of intensely unsettling and scary moments that feel distinctly like Wingard’s craftsmanship, and with Wingard already well into filming on his Death Note adaptation for Netflix, we may be witnessing the first movements of John Carpenter’s natural successor. Having seen the film, I can say that it’s a very effectively crafted found footage movie; furthermore, people who’ve been waiting a long time for a proper BLAIR WITCH PROJECT sequel should find everything they’re looking for here.
Still, nothing’s really changed from what we knew about The Woods.
The screenplay for Blair Witch was written by Simon Barrett. You can check them all out here below. The project got going in 2013, when Lionsgate exec Jason Constantine invited Wingard and Barrett to a secret meeting to discuss the possibility of a Blair Witch sequel.
For now, we’ll have to wait and see… but it looks incredibly promising.
The movie tells the story of Heather Donahue’s younger brother, who is going on a mission to find out what happened to his sister who went missing so many years ago. Hopefully they give us a little more advance warning for that one.

“Blair Witch is hiding in The Woods”, reads the teaser tear sheet that announced the Blair Witch reboot would be opening in theaters on September 16.
