Adele’s 25 Makes History With 3.38 Million First Week Copies Sold

Nielsen Music released its weekly album sales tracker on Saturday and, as expected, the debut week for Adele’s “25” shattered all records, selling 3.38 million actual physical copies, the most since Nielsen began tracking point-of-sale purchases in 1991. His album Tha Carter III sold just over a million copies in a single week in 2008.

Chances are, 25 isn’t done smashing records.

Before 25 was released, it always seemed like a sure thing that 25 would sell a million copies in its first week. It sold 2.42 million copies in a single week 15 years ago in 2000. It is the first album to sell over 3 million copies in a week. Any album on the Billboard 200 chart ranks according to the criteria of multi-metric consumption; this is inclusive of the traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). This album produced the singles “Rolling in the Deep”, “Someone like You”, “Set Fire to the Rain”, “Rumour Has It” and “Turning Tables”.

25 Sold More than Twice the Combined Total of the Nos. In a way, Adele has become the female Michael Jackson.

Sales of Adele’s 25 made up 41% of all record sales in the USA this past week, which included the Thanksgiving holiday. CBS News reported on Beyoncé’s victory at the end of 2013.

Meanwhile, Adele’s first album, 19, is back in the top 20, thanks to a 252% increase in sales this past week.

The buzz and buying around this album shocked Larry Miller, director of the music business program at NYU. That puts “25” squarely in Taylor Swift territory – great storytelling, smart production, judiciously big dramas – plus a dose of secret soul all her own.

The British singer will take her show on the road with a newly announced European tour kicking off in Belfast on February 29. NME has the news. “In all honesty, Adele is the truth – kinda excited a rare talent like hers is in the same breath as our group”, Joey Fatone said to Billboard on the day his record was broken.

So far, the tour only includes dates in the UK, Ireland and other European locations.
