She tearfully went through the obligatory thank yous to her manager, boyfriend, etc., and then Adele seemed to regain some composure as she closed with a jovial “Not bad for a girl from Tottenham that don’t like flying, getting global success”.

She was visibly upset as she received the fourth award of the night, and said: “I’m really sorry about swearing earlier and I’m really sorry for the ugly face”.

Adele, who has sold more records than every singer since Elizabethan versifier Thomas Morley, won best female award at the BRIT Awards on Wednesday.

Adele also spoke about how grateful she was for the success of her comeback album, “25”, saying: “Thank you so much”.

After thanking her label and management, Adele said during her Best Female victory speech: “I’d also like to take this moment to publicly support Kesha”.

Adele used the opportunity to declare support for American singer Kesha who is now involved in a legal battle with Sony Music and a producer she has accused of sexual assault.

Justin Bieber, who performed with Best British Solo Artist James Bay, was named Best International Solo Artist. “Thank you is not enough but it is all I have”.

Rihanna reunited with her ex – who she has dated on and off for the past few years – as they reunited to perform their new single Work, which is already setting the charts alight.

“Man, I’m shaking right now”, the Canadian singer said, adding “Life is a journey”.

Pop superstar Adele is up for four awards, including in the best solo female artist category, in which late soul singer Amy Winehouse is also nominated for the soundtrack to Asif Kapadia’s Oscar-nominated documentary “Amy”.

One Direction won British Artist Video for “Drag Me Down”, beating Adele for the award. I am a huge fan of Adele and think she is just an incredible woman on both the inside and outside.

Award hosts Ant and Dec were taken by surprise when a model wearing a mostly see-through all-in-one outfit came and stood between them as they announced singer Jess Glynne’s performance.

British rapper Stormzy, who won best Grime act at the Mobo (Music of Black Origin) awards in 2014 and 2015 and who had a top 10 hit previous year, said he was disappointed his kind of music was not celebrated.
