But “21”, with its woeful tales about a man she loved and lost, not only blew up, it became the first digital album to sell more than 3 million copies before going on to sell over 11 million copies.

Her new album dropped exactly one month after Adele broke her silence in the music industry October 23.

It’s as if there isn’t a format Adele doesn’t qualify for: She appeals to those millions and millions of fans who have bought Susan Boyle and Michael Bublé albums, but she also shares the same fans as Kanye West, One Direction and the Black Keys.

It would also instantly be the largest selling album of 2015 in total, surpassing the sales of Taylor Swift’s “1989”, which has sold 1.74 million this year (through November 12).

It appears that Adele is referring to her decision not to stream her third studio album “25”.

His three entries in the Top Five last week made him the first male artist to achieve that feat in 34 years, since John Lennon in January 1981.

Adele’s independent United Kingdom label XL Recordings last week chose to withhold 25 from online streaming platforms such as Apple Inc’s Apple Music service, privately owned Spotify and Google Play.

“No Strings Attached” by NSYNC, the boy band starring Justin Timberlake, is the only other album that opened with sales above two million since systematic weekly tracking began in 1991.

The British record is held by rockers Oasis, whose “Be Here Now” sold 696,000 copies in its first week in 1997.

The Adele At The BBC TV special, which aired on the UK’s BBC One on Friday night, officially drew in 4.54m viewers according to stats released today – an impressive 19.8% share of the audience.
