Adele cries as she accepts the award for Global Success onstage at the Brit Awards on Wednesday.
Adele might not have been up for Grammys this year, but she was the top victor at last night’s BRIT Awards at the O2 Arena, where the best in British music was honored.
Despite her superstar status, the singer proved that she was still as down-to-earth as ever, telling the crowd that it wasn’t bad for a “girl from Tottenham”.
And Coldplay were crowned the most successful group in BRIT history after collecting the British Group award for the fourth time, a feat no other band has been able to achieve.
Rihanna’s performance of Work feat Drake at the Brits – which featured a surprise appearance by Drake himself – has helped her reach a new peak of number two.
British group Coldplay had kicked off proceedings with their song “Hymn for the Weekend”, and also picked up the award for best British group. Her Grammy performance had the infamous technical glitch of her microphone falling into her piano while she was performing her song “All I Ask”, luckily her Brits awards performance went on smooth without any glitches and was much appreciated. Oldman then accepted a Brits icon award on behalf of the singer and his family.
Critics’ Choice Award victor Jack Garratt has entered at number three with his debut album Phase, and Justin Bieber – who scooped up the award for worldwide male solo artist – is at number four.
Little Mix’s Black Magic set was dubbed the best performance of the night by MTV UK. “David Bowie is deeply embedded in the heart of British culture, as a fixture within our collective inner psyche”.
The awards – which celebrate global as well as British acts – have been accused of failing to represent the industry’s ethnic diversity, in an echo of the debate raging around the Academy Awards.
