Adele tops BBC Music Awards

Other awards to be presented during the evening will be British Artist of the Year, International Artist of the Year, Song of the Year and Live Performance of the Year.

The Hello singer was named British Artist of the Year and also took home the BBC Live Performance of the Year title for Adele At The BBC, a BBC One special.

Newcomer Jack Garratt was awarded the BBC Music Introducing Artist of the Year Award and the final award of the night went to Hozier, whose song Take Me To Church was crowned by public vote as Song of the Year.

Taylor Swift picked up the International Artist gong, beating off stiff competition from Prince, Foo Fighters, Major Lazer and The Weeknd.

Host Chris Evans announced the show as being “at the centre of music’s universe”, while of the winners, only Hozier and Jack Garrett actually attended the ceremony.

Okay, we’re pretty sure they didn’t, but you have to wonder about this lovely coincidence. Jack Garratt had previously been confirmed as victor of the fifth award, the BBC Introducing Award. “Thank you so much, it’s fantastic”. Radio 1 had all the backstage action during the show.

Performance highlights from the ceremony included sets from One Direction, Ellie Goulding, Little Mix, The Shires, and Rod Stewart, who closed out the show. Stereophonics performed C’est La Vie before the BBC Concert Orchestra saluted Frank Sinatra’s 100th centenary with New York New York.

Speaking to the Mirror, the 25-year-old admitted he was shocked to learn his had won the coveted gong, expecting Uptown Funk to win.
