“To all the other girls who were nominated, thank you for letting me be in your company, you’re all awesome, you’re all incredible and it’s a privilege to be beside you”.

“To come back…I got lost for a while, I didn’t know if I was going to come back, and you all being so kind to me…”

She was the only artist or group to receive more than one award at the ceremony.

Tik Tok singer Kesha is now involved in a lawsuit against her mentor Dr Luke, and on Friday was pictured in tears in court when she was denied a preliminary injunction which would allow her to record music outside of her contract with Dr Luke’s label Kemosabe Records, which is owned by Sony. James Bay picked up the award for British Male, presented by Kylie Minogue.

Other winners of the British Awards are Catfish and the Bottlemen, Jack Garratt, Charlie Andrew, Bjork and Tame Impala for the British breakthrough act, Critics’ choice, British producer of the year, worldwide female solo artist, and global group, respectively.

“It’s nearly impossible to mention Bowie’s name in the past tense”, said Lennox.
