Advocaat explains Sunderland resignation

The favourite ever since Advocaat’s departure has been former West Ham boss Sam Allardyce, who was a defender for Sunderland during his playing days.

Sunderland have approached former Leicester boss Nigel Pearson over their vacant manager’s position, according to an exclusive from The Telegraph.

“I don’t know if Sam would like to go and maybe he is going to kill me next time I see him but I think because he had an experience before in the north east”.

Since Ellis Short took over as chairman in 2011 from Niall Quinn, who believes Sunderland are in need of a revolution, the club have had five permanent managers; Steve Bruce, Martin O’Neill, Paolo Di Canio, Poyet and Advocaat.

Perhaps more importantly, he also has experience in theChampionship, successfully promoting West Ham, so should he fail to keep the club up, he would be a flawless choice to help bring the club back to the Premier League.

Allardyce has been talking to Sunderland about becoming their new manager, but discussions have hit a stumbling block over his demands.

But he is not at the top of Sunderland’s wishlist, although Congerton may have to cast his net wide if he can not convince either leading contenders Sam Allardyce or Burnley’s Sean Dyche to take over on Wearside.

Sunderland are now 19th in the Premier League, above Tyne-side rivals Newcastle, with three points from eight games.

He added: “You need to go a little bit deeper”. Who do you want to take over at the helm?

The club that is yet to win this season is now sitting second last on goal difference and has shown no signs of escaping another relegation scrap this season.

Pearson, who led Leicester City to promotion to the Premier League before keeping them up against the odds, is understood to have held talks with the Black Cats, having been sacked following a string of controversial incidents in the summer. It will be a hard task to ensure the club avoids the drop, but it is one that someone will have to face.
