Sad news out of California this morning, as a sheriff’s office in Marin County has announced that Afeni Shakur, the mother to the late rapper Tupac Shakur, has passed away at the age of 69. However, investigations are still going on to know the real cause of her death, New York Daily News reported.
Afeni was transported to a nearby hospital where she died at 10.28pm.
Born Alice Faye Williams, Afeni is known for joining the Black Panther movement in the 1960s, where she changed her name, becoming the subject of her son’s hit 1995 song “Dear Mama”. She and other Black Panthers were later tried on conspiracy charges, but Shakur Davis successfully argued in court for their release in 1971.
Though her son may be the reason many first recognize Davis, she was also a well-known political activist with strong business smarts who helped preserve her son’s estate upon his death. Tupac had passed, and now I was a business woman, wife, and a mother and we could talk real and I mean really real.
As keeper of all things Tupac, Afeni greenlit the biopic, “All Eyez on Me”. which just recently wrapped filming. She also founded the Tupac Amaru Sahkur Foundation, which supports youth arts programs. And she launched a fashion clothing line called Makaveli Branded based on her son’s fashion sensibility. Tupac’s estate reportedly makes about $900,000 annually.
Music fans grew familiar with Afeni Shakur through the many endearing songs Tupac wrote in honor her. “I carry her with me to this day”.
Tupac Shakur, who died in 1996 at the age of 25, rose to global fame and infamy during the first half of the 1990s.
Later, she realized that her life – mistake-ridden as it may have been – might serve as a lesson to others.

For the last two decades of her life, Afeni Shakur focused on keeping her son’s legacy alive while managing his musical catalog.
