Tarrant County Sheriff Dee Anderson said at a news conference Friday that he responded to Tonya Couch’s complaints by saying it “is a jail, not a resort”.

During Ethan’s sentencing in the drunken-driving trial, a psychologist hired by the defense testified that the teen was a product of “affluenza” – a term he used to describe Ethan’s irresponsible lifestyle associated with his affluent upbringing.

The Associated Press reports that Tonya Couch was wearing handcuffs and regular clothes as she walked through the California airport early Thursday.

Tonya Couch, the mother of “affluenza” teen Ethan Couch, has just arrived in Dallas after being extradited from California, authorities said Thursday. Tapia II ordered her held without bail while she was waiting to be picked up by authorities from Texas.

The mother was then escorted by officers and shackled at the ankles to jail in Tarrant County.

The sheriff hopes that Tonya Couch will encourage Ethan to quickly return from Mexico, but did not say Thursday whether she’d agreed to do so. Couch said that she is married to Fred Couch.

“Couch, you may recall, earned himself his own Wikipedia entry after killing four people and seriously injuring two others in a vehicular accident in 2013”.

The mother of “affluenza” teen Ethan Couch returned to Texas on Thursday after being nabbed in Mexico with her fugitive son. Authorities in Tarrant County said they plan to book her into Tarrant County Jail on a charge of hindering apprehension of a fugitive.

Ethan Couch, 18, is in a Mexican immigration detention facility while he fights deportation, which could take months. Couch was brought back to Texas at 1:30 p.m., and was taken to the Texas jail where she will await her hearing in the morning. Couch and her attorney would like the bond to be reduced.

He received only probation after a defense expert argued Couch had been coddled too much by his wealthy parents, a condition the expert called “affluenza”. The crash killed four people.
