Afghan army pinned down in Helmand
Afghan forces scrambled to beat back the Taliban from the city of Sangin as the insurgents claimed to have captured almost the entire opium-rich district.

The Taliban has taken control of most of the strategic district of Sangin where heavy fighting continues.
“U.S. forces conducted two strikes in Sangin district, Helmand Province, December 23, against threats to the force”, U.S. Army Colonel Michael Lawhorn said.
Fighting around the town has escalated in the past week, and by Wednesday the militants said they had captured all of Sangin, pinning down government troops in an army barracks. So our forces are like: “‘If they don’t cooperate, why should we help them?'” he said.
“Our men are hungry and thirsty”, Abdul Wahab, a local police commander in Sangin, told AFP.
When NATO troops pulled out of Helmand in October past year, hopes were expressed that Afghan forces that moved into the two huge bases left behind by American and British soldiers would be able to take on the Taliban alone.
The contingent, which an Afghan official said includes around 90 people, is on an “advisory” mission with London insisting they will not engage in combat. I haven’t gotten any reports that they are actually in Sangin, but I also haven’t been able to get any confirmation from the US forces about what they’re actually doing there.
In recent days, the Taliban assault has threatened to overrun Sangin, a major poppy-growing area in Helmand, raising alarm that Afghan forces were too overstretched to fend off the insurgency.
“Sangin signifies another humiliating defeat for NATO-trained Afghan forces”, security analyst Mia Gul Waseeq told AFP.
President Ashraf Ghani’s awkward National Unity Government, formed after last year’s inconclusive election, has left key positions unfilled or allowed local politicians to dictate security appointments.
In Washington, White House press secretary Josh Earnest said the nation’s thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and their loved ones, and that the US will continue to work jointly with Afghans to promote peace and stability in their country.
No further details have been given regarding the agenda of Gen. Sharif’s visit to Kabul, however it is expected talks will be held on the Afghan peace process with the Taliban group. But the talks stalled when the Taliban belatedly confirmed the death of longtime leader Mullah Omar, sparking a power struggle within the movement.
