Afghan blasts: Kabul charity hit by bomb and gun attack

A bomber struck close to the building used by Care International late on Monday night, after which three gunman entered the building.

Among those killed was General Abdul Raziq, a senior Afghan army official and the chief of police for district two of Kabul city.

Sediq Sediqqi, the spokesman for the Ministry of Interior says the target of the attack was not immediately clear.

“A group of three suicide bombers equipped with light and heavy rounds of ammunition, suicide vests and an explosives-laden vehicle attacked the humanitarian organization (Care) in Shar Naw area, Kabul City”, the statement reads.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, adding that it had killed tens of soldiers and officers in its recent effort to take chunks out of the security elite in Kabul.

Kabul traffic was blocked in several parts of the city and schools in the area were closed, as security officials evacuated civilians from their offices and homes near the explosion site.

Afghanistan’s foreign partners, concerned about the ability of the security forces to withstand Taliban violence, are expected to pledge support over coming years at the Brussels conference, three months after North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members reaffirmed their commitment at a meeting in Warsaw. An Afghani driver was also injured in that attack.

One of the attackers was wearing a military uniform to blend in with security forces as they left work at the end of the day.
