Afghan leader agrees to meet Nawaz Sharif

“Both leaders agreed to work with all those who would enter such a process as legitimate political actors and act alongside the Afghan government, [but] against those who refuse to take the path of peace”, said the Prime Minister’s Office in Islamabad.

As formal diplomacy failed to break the impasse in Pakistan-Afghanistan relations, Pakistani Pashtun political leaders have convinced Afghan President Ashraf Ghani to meet Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Afghan media reported yesterday.

The Pakhtun Leaders visiting Kabul including Awami National Party (ANP) President Asfandyar Wali Khan, ANP central leader Afrasiab Khattak and some other people.

The Pakistan-brokered direct talks between the representatives of the Afghan government and the Taliban were cancelled after Kabul announced the death of the Taliban leader Mullah Omar in late July.

The official revealed that Ghani had accepted the invitation to meet Nawaz.

“A meeting between (Sharif) and (Ghani) on the sidelines of the United Nations climate change conference is likely”, a Pakistani official said on condition of anonymity.

Ghani reciprocated the sentiments of working with Pakistan to develop peaceful, friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries, the statement said.

Earlier, China’s ambassador in Kabul Deng Xijun advised Mr Ghani to attend the ministerial meeting of the Heart of Asia.

“The meting is likely in Paris on the margins of [the] climate change conference”, Pakistani foreign ministry spokesman Qazi Khalilullah told VOA.

Earlier a same request of meeting was made through UK Prime Minister David Cameron, but Ashraf Ghani refused to meet Pakistani side until it gives of “hatching conspiracies” against Kabul.

The moot will be attended by leaders from several countries around the world.

It is unclear when and where the two leaders will meet, but there are indications the talks may happen in Paris.
