Afghan quake death toll rises further as survivors await aid

Three people died on the Indian side of the disputed region of Kashmir.

The natural disaster, with its epicentre close to district of Jarm, damaged numerous few existing roads, officials said.

Rescue teams were sent to remote mountain areas where the impact of the quake is still unclear.

Thousands of frightened people rushed into the streets in Afghanistan, Pakistan and India as the quake shook a swathe of the subcontinent.

The quake lasted for up to 45 seconds early on Monday afternoon, creating cracks in walls across a wide region and leading to electricity blackouts. He has ordered the military to make themselves available for the relief effort.

“Our houses are destroyed”.

Casualty figures are likely to leap once relief workers return from remote villages that can be accessed only by foot or donkey.

Two army helicopters are also participating in ongoing relief missions, one in the KPK and another in the Gilgit Baltistan area which was also badly hit by the natural disaster. He added, however, that much of the affected region is hard to access.

“The Islamic Emirate calls on our good-willed countrymen and charitable organizations to not hold back in providing shelter, food and medical supplies to the victims”, the group said in a condolence message to quake victims, using its formal name. Pakistani officials said at least two glaciers in the Karakoram mountain range had burst and raised fears of flash-floods. “But everything seems fine besides the roads that are blocked”. The reopening allowed authorities to begin transporting relief supplies to affected areas in the northern regions, where dozens were killed and hundreds of others were left homeless.

Rescuers were yesterday picking their way through rugged terrain and pockets of Taleban insurgency in the search for survivors after a massive quake hit Pakistan and Afghanistan, killing more than 350 people.

Monday’s initial 7.5 magnitude quake was followed by seven aftershocks of varying intensity, including one that hit 4.8 on the Richter scale, the US Geological Survey said. Hundreds of mud-built homes were damaged or destroyed in a landside in Kunar, according to the Afghan Disaster Management Department.

Talking to newsmen in London, he said every possible assistance would be provided to the affected people. Luckily, somebody found him and he was taken to a hospital in the Swat Valley.

Separately, in Nangarhar province bordering Pakistan, Six people were killed and 69 injured, Najeeb Kamawal, head of the local public hospital told AFP.

Another resident, Said Alam, said his family was still waiting for government help. That included 12 schoolgirls who died in a stampede as they tried to evacuate their school in the northern city of Taluqan, police said.
