Bagram is one of the main bases for the 9,800 USA troops left in Afghanistan after worldwide troops ended combat operations a year ago.

Since then, the Taliban have staged a range of attacks in various parts of the country, including a deadly siege at the fortified Kandahar airport and military base that left 50 people dead, the beheading of seven civilians in Zabul province, and a suicide bombing at a guest house in Kabul that badly damaged the embassy of Spain. Fierce fighting in the Sangin district was continuing after the insurgents took control late Sunday, said Mohammad Jan Rasulyar, Helmand’s deputy governor.
