Manager Van Gaal described the Red Devils” performance against Newcastle as “fantastic’ following the game, despite the fact his side slumped to a goalless draw.

Van Gaal introduced Michael Carrick, Hernandez and Antonio Valencia in the second half and Krul had to save from Luke Shaw before spreading himself brilliantly to block a close-range effort from Hernandez.

The Manchester United captain has not scored in his last ten games, a tally which amasses to 858 minutes, his worst return since 2007.

“But now I can choose better because I know my players, and that’s why I have chosen Chicharito, because he is another type from Rooney, and we have also Fellaini, who is another type”.

“It was frustrating. We started great and sharp and we created some chances but didn’t finish them”.

Wayne Rooney has been “hung out to dry” by Louis van Gaal’s style of play at Man Utd so far this season, Neil Custis told the Sunday Supplement.

Tim Krul made a couple of handy saves during the match to keep the visitors on level terms.

“Wayne scored. Only it was not allowed”, he added. “When you see the TV it’s very doubtful so you need eyes then because it is like this, it is doubtful and the rules are when it is doubtful, that you not flag. But I just don’t think everybody is chipping in to the goal count which is what you need”.

“We did a good job on (Adnan) Januzaj too”. But I think we were very unlucky.

United failed to sign Spain worldwide Pedro Rodriguez in mid-week, losing out to rivals Chelsea, although Van Gaal claimed that signing the former Barcelona winger was not a priority.

However, in recent days United have been linked with the Brazilian Neymar whose global agent, Pini Zahavi, was spotted in the Old Trafford director’s box during Saturday’s match.

The Dutchman refused to discuss the report linking United with the Brazil star after the final whistle.

Van Gaal has insisted he does not need a striker and is happy with his options, as reported by ESPN.
