After Attack, Israel Imposes New Movement Restrictions On Palestinians

In March, as US Vice President Joe Biden visited, a Palestinian went on a stabbing spree along the Tel Aviv waterfront, killing an American tourist and wounding 12 people.

The army also said it was deploying two additional battalions – several hundred soldiers – into the West Bank.

Michael Feige, a sociologist and anthropologist specializing in Israeli society, was among the four victims being mourned in the aftermath of Wednesday night’s terror attack in Tel Aviv.

Ahmad Mussa Mahmara, the father of one of the attackers, said his son has two uncles serving life sentences in Israeli prison.

“We understand the Israeli government’s desire to protect its citizens after this kind of terrorist attack”, said Mark Toner, a spokesman for the State Department.

“Achieving just peace and creating a positive atmosphere is the way to ease tension and end violence”.

It is the deadliest Palestinian attack against Israelis since a wave of violence began in October.

Two people were killed January 1 when a gunman sprayed bullets from an automatic weapon near a pub in Tel Aviv.

According to a source who spoke to the Haaretz daily, Erdan said that Israel should renew the policy that prevailed during the Second Intifada, and bury the remains of Palestinians killed while carrying out attacks in a special cemetery rather than return them to their families.

Last week in Paris, representatives from 28 countries, the Arab League, European Union and United Nations met to discuss ways of restarting Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts.

At the same time, as Emily reports, “Hamas, the militant Islamist Palestinian group, praised the attack and threatened more”.

In the hours following the attack, the Defense Ministry rescinded all of the tens of thousands of permits given to Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip that would have permitted them to visit family in Israel or the Old City of Jerusalem and pray at the Al-Aqsa mosque in honor of the holy Muslim month of Ramadan.

Earlier in the day, Russian Federation and France condemned the lethal shooting in the Israeli city.

Two Palestinian cousins are being held in custody in connection with the restaurant shootings, in which at least six people were also injured.

The four fatalities were Israeli, Rosenfeld said. “It should be closed for a protracted period”. Additionally, the wire service reports that the military has also “frozen Israeli work permit for 204 of the attackers’ relatives”.

The gunman in Wednesday’s shooting came from near Hebron, in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

In a statement it said the decision had been taken “in accordance with situation assessments” and the troops would include infantry and elite reconnaissance units.

However, not all Israeli politicians agree with Huldai’s statements.

“People are very sad and very disappointed about losing their opportunity to visit Jerusalem during Ramadan. He does not have any political affiliation”, Mahmara said.

“Instead we hear of them celebrating in Gaza and the West Bank, which reminds us of what we are up against”, he said. “[The Israelis] are using the permits as a kind of revenge and saying “you are punished” even if you did not participate in what happened”. “In his description he said they were wearing suits – this was at the table next to them”.

“East Jerusalem’s economy depends completely on this month [Ramadan]”, Mr Barghouti said.
