The second half featured a rather extraordinary scoring drought.

UMBC hung around and made K-State’s Wildcats earn it despite getting only 12 points from Jairus Lyles, the senior whose 28-point night led the way against Virginia. The sophomore forward finished with eight points, seven rebounds and four steals. It is the first Sweet 16 appearance for Kansas State since 2010.

The Wildcats shot 40.9 percent overall, hitting just 1 of 12 from 3-point range.

UMBC: Despite being undersized and unknown, they shocked the world and made history with an epic game.

“No longer do we have to explain what UMBC means and who we are, they know who we are”, Yvette Mozie-Ross of UMBC enrollment management said.

Both teams had prolonged dry spells in the second half.

As Jones closed the meeting and wished the audience a good evening, Quirk piped up: “Go UMBC!”

“We put our name on the map”.

Students came out in the wee hours of the night, in the frigid-cold, to show their support for the team as they returned from Charlotte, North Carolina. They’re athletic, they’re big. “Can’t take anything away from them”.

UMBC’s improbable run through the NCAA Tournament was brief.

Just one year later, college basketball fans were treated to another stunning upset as Jim Valvano’s NC State Wolfpack defeated Phi Slama Jama’s future NBA Hall of Famers Akeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler of the Houston Cougars in the 1983 Finals.
