After Cruz Disaster, Kasich Has No Regrets About Skipping GOP Convention

The final announcement was made by Mr Trump’s son Donald Jr, who told delegates that NY was casting 89 votes for Mr Trump and six for OH governor John Kasich.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich, left, waves to supporters as his wife Karen listens at the The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum on Tuesday, July 19, 2016, in Cleveland, during the second day of the Republican convention.

Donald Trump Jr. went to a Kasich adviser with an offer, the report in the New York Times Magazine, said: if Kasich joined the ticket, he could be “the most powerful vice president in history”.

Obviously, no one attached to the Trump campaign responded to the Times’ requests for comment, but given the intel they received from Ohio Gov. John Kasich’s office and many others, the account seems all too plausible.

During a delegation breakfast Wednesday, House Speaker Paul Ryan urged OH delegates loyal to Kasich to put their support behind Trump. That’s one reason why Kasich is staying away from the Quicken Loans Arena, the governor told his delegates Thursday morning.

Kasich’s distance and his refusal to endorse Trump didn’t sit well with some of the party faithful in attendance. “People will throw up their hands and say, ‘We don’t like either choice.’ The challenge for someone like me is to make sure we get our Republicans out”. Just two panelists said they could see themselves voting for him, while seven chose Clinton.

She told the Radio Results Network today that even though delegates were technically “unbounded” when Kasich suspended his presidential campaign, he did not free them to vote for Trump. Even he understood that he needed Kasich to win in OH, and give him a chance in the other Rust Belt states.

“It could be”, he said, when asked if the placement of the delegation was a punishment by the Trump campaign.

Yes, the OH governor declined to actually speak at the convention, in large part because he has refused to endorse the candidate the convention is nominating, Donald Trump. “We’re good people. Believe that you can stand and make a difference in the way the world spins, believe that standing on principle and having ethics and integrity can make a huge deal”. “I’m not a huge Trump fan”, he finally offered.

Kasich disapproves of Trump’s message and methods, and the two men ran very different campaigns, Bischoff said. “So I think Gov. Kasich made the right call”.

But Trump is still important to the Ohio Republican Party because weakness at the top of the ticket could hurt down-ticket races, including U.S. Sen.
